The Washington County Solid Waste Management District has announced a public hearing to discuss proposed increases in tipping fees at the Washington County Landfill.
The hearing is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 22, 2025, at 9 a.m. in the Washington County Courthouse Conference Room, 2nd Floor, 99 Public Square, Salem. Citizens will have the opportunity to share their views on the proposed resolution before any changes are finalized.
Under the proposal, the City of Salem’s fixed monthly rate would rise from $6,300 to $7,500. For the general public, the amended fee schedule would set the per-ton tipping fee at $25.60, with a $20 minimum load charge. Tire disposal costs would also increase, with passenger tires at $8 each, semi and oversized tires at $15 each, and tractor/agricultural tires at $50 each. Out-of-county refuse could result in a $100 fine.
The proposal also includes an exemption for three-quarter ton and smaller trucks hauling individual residential, non-demolition, noncommercial trash from Washington County residents. All other fees and fines would remain unchanged.
Officials said the hearing will allow residents to express their opinions directly to the board. “We want to hear from the public and ensure everyone has the opportunity to weigh in on these changes,” a district spokesperson said.
