All gas no brakes is how one may describe boys basketball player Hayden Morrow of the West Washington Senators.
“He's a true senior, a leader, the guy. No one really knows what he has been going through with his body. He's a three sport athlete, and he has no brakes,” Coach Minton stated after the game.
It had been a tough couple weeks for Hayden as he saw a reduction in minutes to give his body the rest and healing it needed.
“The injury definitely sucked, I didn't like sitting out at all. I never like sitting out, I fought Coach every practice trying to get back in there,” Hayden Morrow said after he led his team with 14 points as the West Washington Senators took down the Borden Braves in a win or go home sectional 63 championship.
This Championship was almost like a best of three series as both teams had played each other twice this season all ready with the record standing at on game a piece. The Senators Colton Brown scored the first five points for the Senators but was matched by the Braves Wyatt Jones with five. The first half both teams went blow for blow with the Senators coming out on top, leading by just one point at the break. The third quarter was a defensive chess match with the Senators holding the Braves to just five points, and the Braves defense only allowing the Senators to put up eight points. The fourth quarter was the quarter that the brake lines busted on the Senator offense. The quickness of Morrow and back court mate Brady Rosenbaum fueled a Senator 19-8 run in the fourth quarter with Hayden scoring six of his fourteen points in the final stanza.
“The last couple weeks he hasn't played much for us, and the reason was for this week right here. It paid off and I am glad it did because you saw what happened. He led us both nights and was back to his old self, and I believe it was because of the break,” Coach Minton stated.
With a team that boasts eight underclassmen the sky is the limit.
“It's really special for these guys. They've been working really hard all year long. We talked all summer long about sticking to the plan, go out everyday and win the day, win the night, whether it be practice or a game. These guys did that all year long with pride and it paid off in the end with a championship. The story all year long with this group is nobody wants to score all the points. We have had all seven of the guys who play major minutes lead us in at least one game over the course of the season. That's whats so special about these guys is they don't care. As long as we win that's the ultimate goal,” Coach Minton stated on the unselfishness and togetherness of his team.
Besides Hayden's 14 points it was Neven Marrs chipping in 10, Nash Ables 9, Colton Brown 8, Bryce Heishman 5, Brady Rosenbaum 4, and Holden Russell 4.
