In a recent Scott County Council meeting, Parker Fletcher, an Outreach Representative with Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita's Office, called on Hoosiers to check for unclaimed property before their money gets lost in the shuffle indefinitely. With over $850 million in unclaimed funds statewide, the office is working diligently to reunite residents with their lost assets- ranging from forgotten bank accounts to uncashed paychecks.

“Each year, we return over $1 million in unclaimed property every week, and in 2023 alone, we set a record by returning $81 million to rightful owners,” said Fletcher. “It's fast, free, and easy to check if you have money waiting for you.”

Unclaimed property can come from a variety of sources, including unclaimed wages, stocks, overpaid utility bills, and insurance refunds. The Attorney General's Office holds onto these assets until rightful owners step forward. According to officials, one in ten Hoosiers has unclaimed property, making it more likely than not that someone in your household could be owed money.

To check for unclaimed property, Hoosiers can visit IndianaUnclaimed.gov and search their name or the names of family and friends. If a match is found, individuals can call the Attorney General's Unclaimed Property Division at 1-866-462-5246 for assistance in claiming funds.

With a goal to break records in returning money to the public, the Attorney General's Office encourages residents to act quickly. “This money belongs to the people of Indiana, and we want to make sure it gets back into their hands,” Fletcher emphasized.
