Habitat for Humanity of Clark & Floyd Indiana will break ground on two new homes near downtown New Albany on Tuesday, April 22 at 4:00 p.m., marking the start of a new chapter for two local families and for the community's affordable housing efforts. The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 834 and 838 Pearl Street, where construction is set to begin in May.

This project is part of Habitat’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to affordable homeownership in Clark and Floyd counties. In just the past two years, the organization has helped 10 Southern Indiana families achieve the dream of owning a home. The two new Pearl Street homes have already been matched with well-qualified homebuyers, who are actively completing their required 250 hours of sweat equity—working on their homes and each other’s while also taking part in financial literacy, credit management, and home maintenance courses.

“Affordable homeownership creates ripple effects that can last for generations,” said Jackie Isaacs, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Clark & Floyd Indiana. “It provides the stability families need to thrive, supports better health and educational outcomes, and builds stronger communities.”

The need for affordable housing in the region has become increasingly urgent. According to a recent report by the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana titled HOUSING: The Affordability Challenge in a Growing Region, current economic and policy conditions have led to home prices that are out of reach for many local residents. Habitat’s work addresses this growing gap, providing not only homes but also the education and support necessary for long-term homeowner success.

Stable, affordable housing has far-reaching benefits. It improves mental and physical health, reduces financial stress, and creates better educational opportunities for children. By building homes—and with them, strong community ties—Habitat aims to strengthen the overall well-being of Clark and Floyd County residents.

Habitat invites the public, local leaders, and community partners to attend the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, April 22 at 4:00 p.m. at 834 and 838 Pearl Street, New Albany to celebrate the launch of this impactful project.
