
Scott County Fair's Open Class Entries are Preparing for 2025 Exhibition

The Scott County Fair is just “right around the corner”, June 22-28! We hope you will come visit it and all the projects and consider entering something into the Open Class Buildings!
While it may not have been the best weather this year for growing and harvesting some fresh produce/crops, remember that fair entries just need to have been made since last years Fair, so I’m sure you have many processed and created projects you have made that we hope you consider entering!
The following information has been released on entries of Open Class projects.
Open Class Home & Family projects will be accepted in the 4-H/Open Class Building on Thursday, June 19th from 12 noon till 6 PM, EST. Items can be viewed from the June 23rd-27th, from 5-9 PM, and will be released either Friday the 27th from 8:30-9 PM, or Saturday the 28th, from 9-11 AM.
There are numerous categories for area Youth ages 4-14, and area Adults age 15 and up.
The major categories are: Arts & Crafts, Crochet, Fine Arts, Floral, Foods, Food Preservation, Jewelry, Needlework, Photography, Quilts, and Sewing. (see separate complete listing for more details).
Open Class Agriculture, Gardening & Flower projects will be accepted in the Open Class
Horticulture Building on Monday, June 23rd from 8 AM till 12 noon, EST. Items can be viewed from June 23rd-27th from 6-9 PM, and will be released either Friday the 27th from 8:30-9 PM, or Saturday the 28th from 8-10 a.m.
The Agriculture projects are: 1. Wheat – one (1) quart, 2. Soybeans – one (1) quart, 3. Corn - one (1) quart, 4. Best Display of three (3) ears of field corn, 5. The Gardening projects are: Apples[5], Beans [1/2 pint shelled] or [20 bean pods], Beets [5], Berries [12], Cabbage {1}, Carrots [5], Corn [5 ears unhusked], Cucumbers [5], Eggplant [1], Grapes {a full stem}, Herbs [5], Onions [5], Okra [5], Peaches [5], Peppers [5], Plums [5], Potatoes [5], Pumpkin [1], Rhubarb [5], Squash [1], Tomatoes [5], Salad Tomatoes [12], Market Basket [must contain 6 different varieties of vegetables]
The Flowers projects are: Cut Flowers [Most of the small to medium size flowers require 5 blooms or heads and most of the large flowers require 1 bloom or head]. Also, will accept Hostas, Potted Flowers, Live Flower Arrangements, and Potted Container Flowers.

This program’s goal is to promote gardening and participation in the County Fair Open Horticultural Competitions. Entrants must have grown their own entry. Entrants must complete and turn in entry application at time of open class registration for flowers, vegetables and crops.
Entrants must have entry in at least 2 of the 3 groups (flowers, vegetables and crops). Entrant with the most points will be awarded the title of Scott County Gardener of the Year. In case of a tie, the entrant receiving the most blue ribbons will receive the award.
Point System: 3rd place receives 1; 2nd place receives 2; 1st place receives 3; Reserve Grand Champion receives 5; and Grand Champion receives received 7
A designated representative of the Scott County Master Gardeners will total points. This representative will settle any disputes. The SCMG Board of Directors/Officers will handle any complaints. Winners name and the year of award will be displayed on a plaque maintained in the Scott County Extension Office. Prizes will be listed at registration. The winner will also be listed in local publications. Winners can only win 3 years in a row and must sit out for one year.

1. Old or wilted blooms should not be exhibited.
2. Flowers should be hardened by immersing in water overnight.
3. Only one entry per person in any one class.
