Romance author Loretta Kendall is not only a talented writer, but also a long-time Scott County native whose journey to literary success is as colorful as the characters she creates.
A retired celebrity makeup artist and former editor-in-chief of Lux Local Magazine, Kendall's career has spanned the worlds of fashion, media and now, romance fiction. But it was her passion for stories of love, monsters, and the supernatural that ultimately led her to becoming a best-selling author.
Kendall began her career in the entertainment industry before making
the leap to writing. “I was a makeup artist and talent agent for many years, but I've always been a writer at heart,” she shared. “I started as a fashion and makeup blogger, with articles featured in magazines worldwide, including Vogue's online platform. I also had the privilege of being a featured hairstylist in international publications, such as Inspire Quarterly.”
But it was her work in the magazine industry, particularly as the editor-in-chief of Lux Local Magazine, that helped Kendall hone her skills as a storyteller. The publication, which closed in 2022 due to the pandemic, provided Kendall with a platform to share her writing with a larger audience. Yet, despite her success in the magazine world, it was her love of romance novels that ultimately guided her to write full-time.
“I've always loved a good happily-ever-after story,” Kendall said. “And
I've been married to my husband, Gary, for 29 years. That's a huge
inspiration to my writing.”
In 2017, Kendall made the decision pursue writing romance novels full-time.
Her first trade-published book, Dreamer, blended sports and paranormal romance, drawing from her early experiences writing serial wrestling-themed sports stories for
digital reading apps. However, it wasn't until she found her niche in the “monster romance” genre that Kendall truly began to make a name for herself. Her love for vintage horror and pin-up/rockabilly culture influenced her unique approach to the genre, leading to the creation of stories featuring misunderstood horror monsters searching for love.
“I've always been fascinated by vintage horror,” Kendall explained. “And I love bringing a humorous twist to the monsters, making them relatable and lovable in their own quirky ways.”
Kendall's books are known for their mix of comedy and romance, which she believes is key to connecting with readers.
“People love to laugh,” she said. “If you can make a reader smile, they're more likely to connect with the characters on a personal level.”
As for the chemistry between her characters, Kendall insists that the balance of humor and heart is essential. “Rom-coms give readers an escape, a chance to experience love in a fun
and light-hearted way.”
Though the romance genre often faces criticism for being less serious than other forms of literature, Kendall is passionate about challenging that perception. “Romance has evolved a lot over the years,” she noted, “It's not about falling in love anymore. Characters are more complex, and the genre touches on serious topics, including grief, trauma, and personal growth. It's a genre that continues to grow and evolve.”
Despite the broad reach of the romance genre, Kendall has found her most success within the
subgenres of monster and sports romance. “Monster romance has been the most fun,” she shared. “I get to bring in my love for the universal monsters, but I also get to create these characters who are a little spooky but also looking for love in a way that feels fun and fresh.”
One of her favorite works is Gigi's Monster Garage, the first book in her Ghouls and Gals series. The novel features Gigi, a rockabilly mechanic who's as tough as she is glamorous.
“I love strong female leads,” Kendall said. “Gigi is tough, independent, and unapologetically herself. She's the kind of character I think readers can really connect with.”
To keep her stories fresh, Kendall has chosen to embrace her unique voice rather than chasing trends. “I write what I love, even if it's niche. Readers will find you authentic,” she
said. “That's why monster romance has worked for me. It's different, and people are looking for something new.”
Kendall's connection with her readers is equally important to her success. Social media has been instrumental in building a loyal fan base, with followers from across the
globe, including the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia. She also attends
conventions and book events to meet readers face-to-face. “I love the one-on-one interaction,” she said. “It's such a rewarding part of being an author.”
Set in her beloved state of Indiana, many of Kendall's books feature local settings, including the scenic Bourbon Trail and small-town Americana. One upcoming project is an 80's themed contemporary novel romance set on Lovers Lane in Scott County, where Kendall grew up.
Kendall's books have garnered attention from readers and critics alike. Recently, she was named a top best-seller on Amazon, and her works have been featured on several book blogs. She has also won multiple writing awards, including the Ajoara Writing Competition and
the Share the Love Writing Competition.
For readers eager to dive into Kendall's world of monster romance, her books are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and through the local libraries via the Libby app.
Her social media presence is active on platforms such as Facebook, X, TikTok, and Instagram

Looking ahead, Kendall has several projects in the works. She's currently wrapping up the final book in her Ghouls and Gals series, Harlow's Haute Horrors, and plans to begin a spin-off monster series in the spring. She will be attending several bookish events in 2025, including the Indy Author Event in Carmel, and FrankenCon in Alcoa, Tennessee.
