In my home, the colder weather means a time for baking and making those sweet treats. I find myself using a lot of Vanilla extract. Pure Vanilla extract is very expensive, however this recipe can save you money and you'll have plenty on hand for all your baking needs. You can even give your extracts as gifts.
Ingredients:
6 vanilla beans
1 cup vodka
1-8 oz. Bottle or jar with tight-fitting seal
Ribbon or string for gift-giving
Cut each vanilla bean in half lengthwise, then cut to the correct height to fit inside your bottle or jar.
Place the cut vanilla beans in the bottle and cover with vodka. Be sure to cover beans completely.
Seal tightly with lid and shake to combine.
Store in a cool, dry place for at least 2 monhts. The flavor grows stronger over time. Be sure to shake the jar at least once a week and before using.
For gift-giving decorage the bottle with string or ribbon. Write on a decorative label sticker when the vanilla will be ready to use.
