For the past few years, the soul of downtown Scottsburg has echoed with the sounds of guitars strumming, drums pounding, and voices singing under the evening sky. Music on the Square has become more than just a concert series—it’s a gathering place. A heartbeat of community life. But now, that rhythm is at risk.
Organizers of the beloved Music on the Square are issuing a heartfelt plea for help. Due to a significant funding cut from the Scottsburg Visitors Commission—from $20,000 to $12,000—the future of the free concert series is uncertain. And without additional support from the public and local businesses, the music may not be a free event in the future.
Kevin Smallwood, the man behind the movement, started Music on the Square not for profit, but out of love. “I don’t do it for the money,” Smallwood said. “I do it because I love our community. I wanted it to be something free for families to enjoy, right here in our own backyard. Somewhere close to home where people could come together downtown and make memories.”
That vision has drawn thousands each season. Families, friends, and neighbors gather under the stars at 45 North 1st Street to enjoy live performances by local bands—at no cost to them. But the reality is, while the music may be free to the public, putting on the event is not. That’s where the community comes in.
Smallwood is seeking sponsors to help close the funding gap and ensure this summer’s lineup continues as planned. Opportunities include:
• Title Sponsors – $500
• Stage Sponsors – $300
• VIP Tables – $150
• Sponsor Display – $100
• Ambassador Package – $100
Every dollar goes toward bringing in the bands, setting up the stage, and keeping the event safe and enjoyable for all. Contributions can be made at New Washington State Bank, under the Summer Music on the Square Fund (Kevin Smallwood). No amount is too small.
“If you can contribute, please do so—so that those who cannot can still enjoy and come to the shows,” Smallwood urged.
This year’s lineup promises another season of unforgettable performances:
• May 31 – Six Ways to Sunday
• June 20 – Mystery Train
• June 21 – Midnight Radio
• July 19 – Terry Lee
• July 26 – Rumors
• August 16 – The Skinny
• September 20 – Sounds of Summer
• September 27 – The Mad Taxpayers
• October 18 - Hoosier Daddy Band
Each show begins at 7 p.m. and takes place right on the historic Scottsburg Square.
Already, the community is stepping up. Seven title sponsors have pledged their support: New Washington State Bank, WMPI Radio, Sharon Estep - Your Real Estate Matchmaker, Heritage Insurance and Investments, Scottsburg Lions Club, Bryan Richey Auction Service, and Paws & Play LLC. Two stage sponsors—Dirt Boys Vintage Collectibles and Thomas Plastic Machinery—have also come aboard.
But more help is needed. “This isn’t just about music,” Smallwood said. “It’s about pride in our town, about giving families a reason to gather, to smile, to dance. And I believe that’s worth fighting for.”
