The Scottsburg Board of Works convened to approve multiple key projects aimed at improving city infrastructure, waste management, parks maintenance, and emergency services. The decisions reflect forward-thinking investments that address immediate needs while preparing for future growth.

To modernize trash collection, the Board approved the purchase of several pieces of equipment:

  • Garbage Truck: A Mack garbage truck equipped with a push-out system for efficient operation was approved at $401,000.

  • Garbage Cans: The city will purchase 2,379 standardized garbage cans for $136,672. Each can is tested for durability and will include resident education on proper use and placement.

  • Roll-Off Containers: The city will acquire new containers (possibly in various sizes or one size) not to exceed a total cost of $23,650.

  • Tippers: Two tippers, prices at $15,000, will be installed on older trucks to ensure service continuity if newer vehicles require maintenance.

Mayor Amick highlighted that the new equipment will streamline waste collection, reduce labor demands, and eliminate the need for SASCO stickers, with costs integrated into utility billing.

The Board approved two key upgrades at Beechwood Park:

  • Bathroom Doors Replacement: Coomer Construction won the low bid at $1,408.

  • Covered Bridge: Portion of road repair.

The Board also approved upgrades to the Street Department:

  • Weighing Scales: Innovative Scales was awarded $63,175 to install scales for garbage measurements at the street department.

  • Concrete Foundation: The required concrete work for the scales was approved at $29,500.

  • Trail Repairs: Wingham will resurface and repair trails in the city's parks for $51,476.22, ensuring smooth and safe pathways.

  • Paving Projects: Temple was approved for $11,800 to mill and pave the stretch between Centra Credit Union and New Hope Services.

In a critical move for public safety, the Board approved the purchase of a new fire truck for $892,887, locking in the price before significant expected increases over the next three years. The city will apply approximately $225,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds toward the cost, fulfilling funding requirements by signing the contract this year. The truck will replace a nearly 30-year-old fire engine, well beyond its operational lifespan. The Board will explore options for selling the aging vehicle.

Mayor Terry Amick emphasized that these upgrades will improve operational efficiency, maintain public safety, and provide long-term value to Scottsburg residents.
