When severe weather happens, they bring with them the opportunity for people to take advantage of the opportunity and that’s why Washington County Sheriff Brent Miller is urging residents to stay alert in the aftermath of the severe storms—not just for their safety but also against potential scams from storm chasers and repair offers.
Miller said while many may have good intentions, not all are legitimate.
“If you’re approached by anyone offering help, be cautious,” Sheriff Miller advises. “Take the necessary steps to verify their credibility before making any commitments.”
Here are some tips to protect yourself:
Verify credentials – Ask for proper licenses, insurance, and references.
Get multiple quotes – Don’t feel pressured to sign contracts on the spot.
Watch for red flags – Be wary of high-pressure tactics, especially from out-of-state contractors.
Check with local authorities – Call us to confirm the legitimacy of any company or individual offering services.
Miller said it’s better to take a little extra time to verify than to risk falling victim to scams. Stay safe and protect yourself, your property, and your neighbors.
