Silver Creek Township has purchased Speed Park, securing the future for a nearly 9-acre public space that has served as a gathering place for Sellersburg families for over a century.
Located at 175 Indiana Avenue near Silver Creek High School, the park was recently listed for sale by Heidelberg Materials for $410,000. The listing raised concerns among residents about potential commercial on residential development on the site.
In response, Silver Creek Township Trustee Billy Ramser led the effort to acquire the property to ensure it remains a space for recreation, families, and community events.
The park, once a lively venue for art shows and local activities, has fallen into despair in recent years. Playground equipment is damaged, trash bins are full, and graffiti is visible on several structures.
Township officials plan to begin cleanup and restoration efforts to revitalize the park and return it to its role as a central gathering space for community.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is schedule for 1 p.m. on April 21 at the park to mark the beginning of its new chapter under township ownership.
