After a devastating fire in February 2025 destroyed the Dollar General Market in Austin, the community was left without too many choices of household essentials, meats, and produce beyond what is found in the convenience stores or the one small grocery store. In response, Dollar General partnered with its former landlord, Rafferty Development, to redesign and reopen its former store located next to the damaged Market.

Dollar General is still assessing the damage at the DG Market site and expects to announce updated construction plans once the evaluation is complete. Meanwhile, the newly redesigned temporary location at 250 Highway 31 officially held its grand opening Saturday, April 26, 2025.

Dollar General first came to Scott County more than 40 years ago, opening its first Austin store in 1983. The company now operates four locations within the county.

Jalen May, 19, admitted to intentionally setting the fire inside the newly opened Austin Dollar General Market on Sunday, February 9th, around 7:40 p.m.
